Computing

I began computer programming in 1982 with a BBC Model B using its excellent structured Basic. I started lecturing, mainly teaching COBOL, at Lewisham College in 1984, on a part-time basis, and became full time in 1987. I moved to the University of Greenwich in January 1997. Over the years I have given consultancy to a large number of companies, writing systems, giving advice or delivering training. The systems are predominantly for SME’s and built in Microsoft Access. I am a business advisor for the Greenwich Enterprise Board.

 

Music

After leaving Cambridge University with an MA in English Literature, I was a professional musician with The Climax Blues Band and an early multi-media band Principal Edwards Magic Theatre. Principal Edwards were discovered by John Peel and made 3 albums, two of which were produced by Nick Mason of Pink Floyd.

With Climax Blues Band, I made the albums Climax Chicago Blues Band, Stamp Album and Gold Plated. Gold Plated sold over a million in the USA alone. We had a world wide hit single in 1977 called Couldn't Get It Right.

I now play piano accordion in the modern folk band Meridian and The Climax Ceilidh Band. I have a recording studio at home, and make extensive use of music technology. The main software I use is Cubase.

Earth to Earth This film was shot entirely "in camera" on 8mm film without any editing. The shooting was videoed at the same time and I scored the music to that. It was entered in the Straight 8 international film festival, won first prize, and was shown at Cannes Film Festival 2005.

Personal

My wife Belinda was also in Principal Edwards Magic Theatre. She is a music teacher at Goldsmiths College and Rose Bruford College.. My son, Jonah (b. 1977) has a BSc in Computing Science from Southampton University [1999] and now works for Google in Zurich as an interface developer. My daughter Daisy (b. 1983) has a BA from Birmingham University (2004).
